MiCBT Masterclass 17: Using MiCBT with Couples

Fee

$60 AUD

Therapists who work with adults and older teens do their best to address the client’s symptoms, yet these symptoms may be triggered, reinforced and maintained through relationships. Having skills to address relationship issues is, therefore, very helpful.

There are several methods to doing therapy with couples. One of the difficulties frequently encountered with standard approaches is that changes tend to remain at the cognitive and emotional levels of a more fundamental issue. Personality traits, childhood trauma, social dynamics, and sexual preferences remain important barriers to genuine and productive change for many couples. Unless a degree of neuroplasticity occurs, these deeply rooted causes tend to reactivate relationship dissatisfaction and discord. MiCBT is a helpful approach to addressing relationship difficulties. It offers a means of rapid yet deep transformation by allowing a sufficient degree of brain reorganisation to allow the profound changes needed for the couple.

This masterclass will describe three principal ways in which MiCBT can be implemented with couples. This masterclass will explain how to address important psychodynamic principles using schema-related interoceptive desensitisation. It will also highlight the potential traps that we need to recognise and avoid. These include differentiating what constitutes a conflict of interest from what does not and the understated yet frequently occurring trap of transference when working with couples. This masterclass can also benefit you personally if you are in a relationship.

You will learn:

  • How to use MiCBT to resolve problems that are not about the relationship but do create relationship issues
  • How to use MiCBT when both partners want to resolve problems that are about the relationship.
  • How to use MiCBT when at least one person wants to separate.
  • How to identify a conflict of interest and the traps of transference.
  • How to address important psychodynamic principles using schema-related interoceptive desensitisation in MiCBT.
