MiCBT Masterclass 13: Addressing Distressing Thoughts with MiCBT

As a universal condition of human life, distressing thoughts have been the subject of philosophies and ancient teachings of wisdom across cultures for thousands of years, and later the target of most therapy approaches. This is because distressing thoughts are integral to emotional and personality disorders and intrude on our dreams.

Based on neurophenomenology, cognitive science and Buddhist psychology, MiCBT takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing distressing thoughts. Using the co-emergence model of reinforcement as an illustration, Dr Bruno Cayoun will discuss the importance of complementing our knowledge of distressing thoughts as manifestations of interoceptive cues (body sensations).

In this masterclass, he will discuss mindfulness-related ways of addressing such “bottom-up” cognitive processes both during and outside mindfulness meditation practices.

You will learn:

  • Understanding of the manifestation of thoughts in MiCBT
  • The co-emergence model of reinforcement and its relevance to the emergence, maintenance and extinction of distressing thoughts
  • How to address distressing thoughts with MiCBT in clinical practice
