Are you a mental health therapist seeking to take your expertise to another level? Are you looking to make a difference in how mental health is best addressed? If so, a transdiagnostic approach, such as Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MiCBT), is the answer.

MiCBT is an established evidence-based integration of mindfulness training taught in the Burmese Vipassana tradition of Ledi Sayadaw, U Ba Khin and S. N. Goenka, with well-established principles of cognitive and behavioural methods. MiCBT has been shown through rigorous research to greatly improve behavioural, interpersonal, and transpersonal effectiveness in a wide range of acute and chronic psychological disorders, including those with complex comorbidities.

Through the MiCBT Foundation Course, you will gain and enhance your understanding of mindfulness insights and behaviour reinforcement, explore recent neuroscience findings related to behaviour maintenance and change, and learn to engage clients in the treatment plan. The course will also equip you with powerful strategies to reduce your clients’ avoidant behaviour, enhance their conflict resolution skills, and help them adopt a more compassionate attitude, preventing relapse.

Importantly, you will learn core and advanced personal mindfulness meditation skills that profoundly improve mental well-being. There is evidence that therapists practising mindfulness decreases their mental fatigue and the frequency of burnout and increases therapist effectiveness. This unique integration of mindfulness and CBT is known as a “second-generation mindfulness-based intervention”, as it includes essential sets of transformational skills from Buddhist psychology.

Take part in the reputable MiCBT Foundation Course, taught by industry-leading professionals, to benefit from these techniques and start making real change in your therapy outcomes and professional satisfaction!

This foundation course involves didactic, practical and experiential means of learning, including:

  • A range of mindfulness meditation practices (as traditionally taught in Burmese Vipassana)
  • Implementation of the four stages of MiCBT, including mindfulness-based exposure and relapse prevention strategies
  • Masterclasses delivered online
  • The opportunity to role-play core implementation skills with colleagues in online break-out rooms
  • Real-case demonstrations on video

What will I learn in the Foundation Course?

How is the Foundation Course structured?

The MiCBT Foundation Course is a 12-week training course with ten 3-hour online lessons.

Accordion Content

This class will introduce the four-stage structure and theoretical underpinnings of MiCBT—the Co-emergence Model of Reinforcement. This will include the neurobehavioural bases underlying mindfulness meditation and the rationale for using mindfulness in the Vipassana tradition in MiCBT. You will be asked to practise mindfulness of the body (attending to posture and movements non-judgementally in daily actions in order to anchor attention in the present).

You will also practise a pre-mindfulness relaxation method called progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) twice daily and do some reading from materials provided to you as part of this course.

This week’s class will demonstrate how to address possible difficulty keeping a regular home practice of mindfulness meditation. The teacher will demonstrate the use of Socratic dialogue to clarify possible difficulty with daily practice.

The class will also describe the practice of mindfulness of breath and provide you with a rationale for its practice to improve attention regulation and executive functions in daily life.

This week’s class will guide you to develop your own emotion-regulation skills with the practice of mindfulness of body sensations, using a method called unilateral part-by-part body-scanning (from the original Burmese Vipassana tradition of U Ba Khin and S. N. Goenka).

This week’s class will also demonstrate the delivery of the rationale for integrating mindfulness of body sensations in therapy. The trainer will explain how equanimity in mindfulness meditation acts as an exposure (to sensory stimuli and memories) and response prevention method. You will have the opportunity to role-play the skills in breakout rooms and discuss your implementation.

This week’s class will discuss the effects of neuroplasticity on your meditation practice. It will also emphasise the role and practice of equanimity, both during mindfulness meditation and applied in daily life, to increase your ability to recognise the deeper and usually subconscious characteristics of emotional experiences.

You will learn to apply the meditative skills in everyday life and regulate emotions more efficiently with the Mindfulness-based Interoceptive Exposure Task (MIET) when faced with common stressors.

This week’s class will introduce the role and practice of mindfulness-based exposure methods in MiCBT. It will guide you to use these methods in your own life, using skills acquired in the preceding weeks. This increases one’s levels of equanimity and creates a sense of increased self-confidence.

You will also learn the first advanced body-scanning method, called symmetrical scanning, which involves a simultaneous bilateral allocation of attention.

There is no online teaching this week as more time is needed to implement and further develop the previous week’s skills.  During this week, you will be asked to repeat last week’s symmetrical scanning method of meditation without audio instructions.

You also learn to do your own review of your early progress with exposure.

This week’s class will guide and assist you in addressing the most avoided situations and resolve potential difficulties you may have with exposure methods. You will learn to review progress with the results of exposure systematically.

The class will also introduce you to a more advanced and deepening mindfulness meditation method called partial sweeping. This body-scanning method enables earlier detection of more subtle experiences, including early distress cues, with which you will learn to apply equanimity.

This week’s class will teach you the first skillset to develop your own mindfulness-based interpersonal skills, called “experiential ownership, ” enabling you to take “ownership” of your experience and disown that of others, thereby setting healthy interpersonal boundaries. This method also teaches you to “see suffering” for what it is when someone reacts to you negatively, rather than seeing malice and spite.

You will also learn the next advanced body-scanning method, sweeping en masse, which enables deep perception of early onset of emotional processing, including early detection of distress cues.

This week’s class will teach you the second mindfulness-based interpersonal skillset, which teaches you to integrate the interpersonal mindfulness skills learned last week with seven steps of assertive communication.

You will also learn one of the most advanced body-scanning methods taught in MiCBT called transversal scanning. This method will allow you to feel the inside of the body and neutralises deep-rooted schematic modes of emotional reactivity.

This week’s class will teach you the principal of relapse-prevention methods of MiCBT. It will teach you to self-implement compassion training, grounded in thoughts, emotions and daily actions, through the practice of loving-kindness meditation and ethical living. You will learn to increase your level of compassion by integrating the empathic state produced by loving-kindness meditation with mindfulness of ethical intentions and actions. This will create and maintain a greater sense of connectedness with others and a sense of increased well-being.

You will also learn to use the most advanced body-scanning technique in MiCBT, which enables you to scan your body in its totality, eventually in a single breath, with a method called sweeping in-depth.

There is no online teaching this week, as it is an extension of the previous week’s skills, which require more time to integrate into daily life. You will be learning to further cultivate compassion for yourself and others through loving-kindness meditation and ethical living in as many daily situations as possible.

You will also start the maintenance practice, which is recommended to clients/patients following the completion of the programme. This consists of practising once daily only for 45 minutes (provided no crisis is encountered), with 10 minutes of mindfulness of breath at the start, followed by 25 minutes of sweeping in-depth, and 10 minutes of loving-kindness at the end.

This week’s class will reinforce your proficiency in compassion training and link mindfulness of ethical intentions and actions to a sense of self-worth. The class will summarise the course and review your overall outcomes. It will describe future training and use of the Institute’s resources will be discussed.

It will also present the opportunity and procedure for MiCBT accreditation. You will be guided through the procedure to access the online learning outcome form and obtain your certificate of completion.

No prior knowledge of mindfulness is assumed, but basic skills in cognitive and behavioural techniques are required. MiCBT is a mindfulness-based therapy specifically designed to address clinical and subclinical conditions.

Students and currently registered practising psychologists, psychiatrists, general practitioners (mental health), mental health social workers, mental health occupational therapists, mental health nurses, counsellors* and psychotherapists* may apply. Proof of membership from registering body is required.

* Australian counsellors and psychotherapists must be ACA-registered (Level 3) or PACFA-registered (Clinical Member).

I went through the "Blue Book" on my own more than two years ago, having kept the maintenance practice a daily one ever since. Going through the practices with Alia showed me that I was not scanning for schemas-avoidance-craving but simply breathing through. I also recognized that I had gotten comfortable with the practice and realized the value of bringing effort into each one, keeping a sharp awareness and not feeding the default mode network more than what is required. Alia was fantastic at catching our individual processes and calling us on them with "right speech", invaluable for growth. Yes, this MiCBT training is a life changer and is also giving a second breath to my calling as the intent is to apply and offer its practices around me, in Quebec and Ontario, Canada. I am looking forward to the Applied Course in April with Alia. With a deep gratitude, thank you!

I found the course was very informative, the theories were very well explained, evidence based, and my learning was supported by practice. I was stretched outside of my comfort zone and that was challenging and rewarding. The MiCBT foundation course exceeded my expectations as this course not only added to my professional knowledge and skills as a psychologist/psychotherapist but also strengthened my skills to maintain personal growth and well-being. The strongly emphasized psycho-educational component of this MiCBT training and the daily practices related to this course enabled me to realistically understand and effectively manage or resolve not only some ongoing challenges but also the multiple after-effects of some old traumas..... And the best thing about this course is experiencing the gradual development of metacognitive insight, equanimity as well as compassion with the relapse prevention approach in a highly transforming manner which is no doubt a lifelong asset at personal and professional level.

Overall this was an excellent course. I was going through quite a lot of personal challenges throughout and found the support of the group and the practice pivotal in my ability to 'ride the wave'. I found the structure and detail of this program very beneficial, and was motivated by the commitment that shined through from all the participants involved in our group. The MiCBT course exceeded my expectations, and I would highly recommend it. Bruno is an excellent teacher and clear communicator. In his words, this course is a tight integration of mindfulness (based on Vipassana meditation) and CBT. I could not agree more. I have attended multiple short and long meditation courses, including retreats, before but have never managed to maintain a consistent daily practice. During MiCBT, I committed to a 2x daily practice and was able to maintain this throughout most of the course. A significant contribution to my commitment was Bruno’s adept explanation of the neuroscience behind mindfulness, particularly the Default Mode Network. It motivated me to trust in the process and experiential work. MiCBT helped to sharpen my skills of mindfulness, commit to a routine daily practice, and hold greater determination in cultivating this essential way of living and being with equanimity and compassion. Much gratitude to you, Bruno.

Having seen how effective and beneficial the training is, I am keen to develop my mindfulness practice and complete further training to enable me to use micbt to assist clients. The course has, on average, required 1 1/2 hrs a day over the 10 weeks in addition to the online lectures, so if planning to enrol, keep this in mind. However, the time spent was very worthwhile and beneficial, and I would highly recommend this course!

The time was well spent and I am thankful for the opportunity.

I am grateful that Dr. Cayoun was able to come to Canada and introduce MiCBT and that he had designed a method to allow those of us, far from Tasmania, to receive further training in the model. I am excited about participating in the Applied Course and to begin treating patients using the program. As a Vipassana student and practitioner it was heartwarming to have the traditional Theravada framework given its due, and it was evident that Dr. Cayoun is not only a gifted clinician but also an experienced meditator with a depth of knowledge who models the results of a deep practice.

The Foundation Course was the best post-graduate training opportunity I have received. It was challenging but very rewarding. It deepened my understanding of MiCBT and the strategies involved to effect change, and helped me experience MiCBT from a client's point of view. As a result, I feel much more confident in using MiCBT in my clinical practice.

This course is primarily experiential and for this reason it is both challenging and meaningful. The mindfulness practice was difficult to fit into my busy life with work, family, friends and parenting a toddler, but it actually created some much needed quiet time. I learned to value the practice, and look forward to it. The theoretical framework is well thought out, and easy to apply. Bruno is an exceptional instructor. He listens attentively and genuinely cares about his student's progress. He also has a great sense of humor, which keeps the training light and refreshing. I highly recommend this course to anyone who finds that CBT alone isn't helping their clients adequately. The mindfulness component is key to self regulation issues!

Mindfulness is a therapeutic strategy but it is more than this. To get the most out of it you have to live it as well. Or at least try. It is not simply something you do with your clients.

Of all the professional development courses I have done, this course is without peer. It exemplifies the imperative of experience in the learning process...I have gained enormously at a personal level, and have valuable insight to its professional application.
