Addressing Trauma with Mindfulness-integrated CBT: Principles and Practice

As mindfulness-based interventions are increasingly used to address a wide range of psychological disorders, therapists need as much training as possible with complex conditions, especially those accompanied by trauma history. Mindfulness-integrated Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MiCBT) is an established transdiagnostic intervention specifically designed to address a wide range of clinical and subclinical conditions, and to help prevent relapse. It is an evidence-based integration of traditional CBT and mindfulness meditation in the Burmese Vipassana tradition of Ledi Sayadaw, U Ba Khin and Goenka. MiCBT uses novel and well-documented exposure and cognitive reappraisal techniques, tightly integrated with the principles and practice of mindfulness, to specifically decrease anxiety and emotional reactivity during distressing situations. These techniques are congruent with recent neurobehavioural research in memory reconsolidation which shows that memory, including memories of trauma, are subject to change each time they are remembered and require continual reinforcement for their maintenance. The purpose of this workshop is to provide a general understanding of MiCBT and its main theoretical underpinning, the coemergence model of reinforcement, and its approach to addressing trauma. We will then learn a specific skillset to reduce distress, especially with traumatic memories. A video demonstration will be included.
