Mindfulness-based CBT for
Crises Intervention and Relapse Prevention
- Date: Monday March 19 2007
- Venue: Jasper Hotel, Melbourne
- Level: Beginner to intermediate, no experience of mindfulness required
- Facilitator: Bruno Cayoun
- Workshop Objectives: The aim of the workshop is to demonstrate effective skills to facilitate the treatment of acute and chronic conditions with a particular focus on the experience of specific principles of mindfulness meditation and their sophisticated integration with CBT skills.
Mindfulness is a mental state that requires deliberate attention to what is experienced in the present moment with a non-judgmental and non-reactive attitude. The mindful observer perceives an emerging experience as a transitory and impersonal event, and is grounded in the present moment to take appropriate action, rather than merely reacting to stimuli. Mindfulness-based CBT (MCBT (MiCBT)) integrates the core components of CBT techniques with mindfulness training, as understood and applied in the most ancient Theravada teaching.
The four-stage model of MCBT (MiCBT) makes use of recent developments in information-processing and behavioural research, enabling the client to manage crises by locating and targeting the locus of reinforcement of a reactive behaviour—rather than simply attempting a desensitisation to stressors. Because MCBT (MiCBT) addresses both the internal and external contexts in which maladaptive behaviour is maintained, it is also used as a relapse prevention method in a wide range of disorders. The particularity of this model is its applicability to a wide range of disorders, acute or chronic, and its utility as a crisis intervention. The model will also be explained from its neurophenomenological basis and illustrated with latest research in neuroplasticity (e.g., Lazar et al., 2005)
Teaching modalities will include introspection (mindfulness meditation), Power Point slide presentation, discussion, role-play, and master class demonstration or video screening of real cases. - Contact: workshops@aacbtvic.org.au

APS National Conference 2007
- Date: 29 September 2007
- Venue: Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre
- Level: For delegates who have already attended an introductory or advanced workshop in MiCBT, MBSR or MBCT. It is assumed that all participants have an existing knowledge and practice of mindfulness.
- Length: Full day Workshop (8.30am-4.30pm)

The aim of this advanced workshop is to provide participants with a practical understanding of this integration. The emphasis will be on the demonstration of specific skills which enable immediate benefits and facilitate commitment to treatment in difficult clients. These include designing and providing clients with effective behavioural experiments which make use of mindfulness skills to reappraise unhelpful beliefs and minimise reactivity.
Through a combination of learning activities, including mindfulness practice, master class and role-play, workshop delegates will be exposed to advanced skills and learn how to apply them in their work.
The workshop will also help overcome the common difficulties encountered by therapists with their clients’ practice of mindfulness and perhaps their own.
