Mindfulness-integrated
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Short Progress Assessment (SPA©)
Author: Bruno A. Cayoun, University of Tasmania & Psychology Centre (TAS)
Description: This client-rated questionnaire enables week-by-week assessment of
progress with therapy. It is used for both clinical and research purposes. The SPA acknowledged both 'outcome' and 'process'. Outcome measures involve two main scales, Severity (symptomatology) and Manageability (self-efficacy). Interviewees are asked to evaluate their levels of symptom severity and manageability on five subscales (Behavioural, Cognitive, Interoceptive (body sensations), Affective, and Interpersonal) using a 5-point Likert-type scale.
In addition to rapid assessment of outcome, the SPA also measures the process of therapy with two Perceived Outcome scales. One is the Perceived Improvement scale, which requires the Interviewee to summarise how much they perceive their improvement to be on the five subscales cited above. The other is the Satisfaction with Therapy scale, which provides rapid evaluation of client satisfaction on five measures: Therapy Type, Therapy Length, Relationship with Therapist, Skills Learned, and Cost (If applicable). Administration requires between 2 and 3 minutes. Readability is appropriate for scorers from age 12 and adults.
The SPA forms are free and can be reproduced for clinical and research purposes. There is also a version for children (Parent and Teacher forms).
Research: Psychometric data for norms, validity and reliability across scales have been collected from 370 young and older adults in the community in clinical settings. The results are currently being analysed. The results should be available in mid 2007. Updates on results and publication will appear on this site.
Software: The SPA Writer© is now integrated in the Mental Health Clients Management System (MHCMS©) to enable rapid computation and analysis of results, multi-search database to select clients for effective sample-specific reports, and produce instant summary statistics and graphs that can be simply printed or exported to MS Word and Excel.

Mindfulness-based Self Efficacy Scale (MSES©)
Authors: Bruno A. Cayoun, University of Tasmania & Psychology Centre & Janet Freestun, University of Tasmania & The Hobart Clinic
Description: This client-rated questionnaire was constructed to measure the change in
levels of perceived self-efficacy before, during, and following mindfulness-based therapy programs. It is used for both clinical and research purposes.
The MSES consists of 7 scales, (Behaviour, Cognition, Interoception (perception of body sensations), Affect, Interpersonal, Avoidance, and Mindfulness), each containing 5 items. Interviewees are asked to evaluate their perception of self-efficacy on a 5-point Likert-type scale, according to how much they now agree with each of the 35 statements. Administration usually requires between 3 and 6 minutes.
Readability is appropriate for adolescents and adult scorers.
The MSES forms are free and can be reproduced for clinical and research purposes.
Research: Some psychometric data have been collected by Linda Isbell and Matthew Hunsinger at the University of Massachusetts in a large sample (N=1250) and are being analysed. In Australia, Cayoun and colleagues are continually collecting data in clinical contexts. The instrument has been piloted and used mainly in clinical settings. However, the MSES is currently being used in several studies of mindfulness-based therapy outcomes with an attempt to provide some validity and reliability data in therapy contexts. Research collaboration is welcome and can be discussed with the principal author.
Software: The MSES is being integrated in the Mental Health Clients Management System (MHCMS©) to enable rapid computation and analysis of results, multi-search database to select clients for effective sample-specific reports, and produce instant summary statistics and graphs that can be simply printed or exported to MS Word and Excel.
