Mindfulness practices are fast emerging as evidence-based ways to approach mental health treatment and counselling.
There has been considerable interest from our area of Tasmania in mindfulness approaches. Quite a few people have trained in modalities like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, and Mindfulness integrated CBT.
Mindfulness is now being encouraged locally in some educational settings and certainly in counselling and medical settings.
Over the last two years a group has been meeting to encourage the personal and professional use of mindfulness. Based in Launceston, this group has been comprised of professional people of different disciplines in the human service sector – predominantly in the health/counselling sector, but also the education sector. The general aim is to promote enquiry, practice, and support.
This group began through the impetus of individuals trained in MiCBT, is independent of any particular modality, has affiliation with the MiCBT Institute, and promotes enquiry into the meaning of “mindfulness”.
We anticipate activities that assist professionals to retain their knowledge and skills in mindfulness, and to promote opportunites for further training.
Professionals with no, or limited, experience in mindfulness are welcome to express an interest. It is anticipated that there will be some opportunites to meet the needs of those with more limited exposure to mindfulness but want to know more.
As well as the ‘participants list’, the convenor keeps an ‘enquirers list’. This list is for those who may want to know more about what is being offered, but who may not wish to engage more formally with the group at any particular time. This group receives (edited) monthly summaries of meetings and other relevant material.
If you have an interest please contact me by email.
Your sincerely
David Hunnerup (convenor)
