Alice Shires
University Clinic Director
University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia)
Alice Shires is the Psychology Clinic Director at UNSW Psychology Clinic Sydney.
Alice trained as a social worker before going on to complete her Clinical Psychology Training at University College, London in 1996.
She has worked as a clinician in a range of mental health settings both in the UK and Australia including working with victims of torture, trauma, pain, acute and chronic mental health problems and those experiencing psychosis.
Alice has been involved in the teaching and supervision of Cognitive and Cognitive Behavioural Therapies for several years and has an interest in the development and integration of evidence based cognitive behavioural therapies with the ‘Third Wave’ of Acceptance and Mindfulness practice. Alice has attended workshops presented by Stephen Hayes, Bruno Cayoun and Mark Williams and has been able to develop Mindfulness-integrated CBT in her practice and into the Psychology Clinic at UNSW.
UNSW Psychology Clinic has been able to host four workshops by Bruno Cayoun since 2004. Alice Shires has been examining data taken from workshop attendees in order to examine issues relating to how well mindfulness theory is put into practice during and following training and how much the personal practice of mindfulness meditation is essential to the clinician’s ability to offer the training to clients.
Alice can offer individual supervision at UNSW and has started an interest group for clinicians using MiCBT in the Sydney area.
